Norwich Guildhall, Norwich
anding since the Battle of Agincourt, the Norwich Guildhall has commanded civic authority over Norwich. Its intimidating monolithic appearance is attributed to its intricate galleted flintwork. The Norwich Guildhall is a window into Norwich’s rich history and remains a dominating architectural focal point in the bustling marketplace.

Project Summary

This project was focused on repairing and conserving the Guildhall’s historic fabric.

This involved specialist flintwork, conducting stone and mortar repairs, and completing specialist masonry cleaning.

Gallets were carefully reinstated with a specially developed black mortar which returned the Guildhall to its original form, while allowing water to shed effectively.

Mortar repairs were completed to return damaged and decaying stone to its original form, in order to mitigate weathering. Multiple mortar mixes were made and applied to different masonry to allow the stone repair to aesthetically correspond with the original stonework. Significantly weathered stones were removed and replaced with hand worked stone completed by our in house masons.

Messenger were also contracted to remove heavy sulphation to the Guildhall’s decorative stonework, most notably the heralded plaques. Specialist cleaning was conducted to remove the sulphate which revealed intricate details of medieval masonry. The process also revealed elements of archaeological significance revealing fragments of polychrome.
