The Royal Chelsea Hospital’s story began over 300 years ago during the reign of King Charles II, whose vision for a home for veteran soldiers was brought to life by Sir Christopher Wren. He was commissioned to design and erect the building.
Royal Hospital Chelsea has been awarded a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the essential repairs to the Grade II* Listed stable building designed by Sir John Soane.
The contract works comprise the conservation, refurbishment and alterations to the existing Soane Stables buildings including structural alterations and additions; construction of an additional floor contained within the stable block using a specialist lime mortar; installation of new doors, windows and sashes within the existing frames to the external walls; replacement and upgrading to all mechanical and electrical services; installation of new heating; new finishes and fittings to form the new museum, shop and café as well as spaces for use by the public.
